The Nordic Council Literature Prize

1976

Ólafur Jóhann Sigurðsson became the first Icelandic author to receive the Nordic Council’s Literature Prize, for the novels Að laufferjum and Að brunnum, in 1976.

The following Icelandic authors have also received the prize: Snorri Hjartarson (1981), Thor Vilhjálmsson (1988), Fríða Á. Sigurðardóttir (1992), Einar Már Guðmundsson (1995), Sjón (2005) and Gyrðir Elíasson (2011).
