Úlfar Þormóðsson

Úlfar Þormóðsson was born June 19th 1944 on the farm of Litla-Brekka, in Skagafjörður, on the North coast of Iceland. He grew up there, as well as the South-Western town of Keflavík. Úlfar received his teacher’s diploma in 1966 and tought at the Njarðvík primary and secondary school from 1966 to 1972. In mid-year 1971 he started working at the newspaper Þjóðviljinn and remained there, on and off, until the year 1990. Úlfar published the magazine Spegillinn (The Mirror) from 1983 to 1987. In 1984 he founded the art gallery Gallerí Borg and served as it’s chair until March 1987, and again from 1990 through 1992.

Úlfar’s first novel, Sódóma Gómorra, was published in 1966. From 1969 to 1993 he published five novels, as well as histories and the aformentioned magazine. Since 1993 he has devoted himself solely to writing and has published a number of novels, including Harpandi jörð (Falling Earth, 2003) and Rauð mold (Red dirt, 2004), historical novels both concerning the Turkish slave trader’s raids on the East coast and Westman islands in the early 17th century. His most recent novel is Boxarinn (The Boxer, 2012).
