Steinunn G. Helgadóttir

Bio

Steinunn G. Helgadóttir was born in Reykjavik in 1952. She studied at the Gothenburg Academy of the Arts. She has worked as an artist and curator for many years, collaborating in group exhibitions both at home and abroad, and has held numerous private exhibitions. She sat on the board of the Federation of Icelandic Artists from 1995-1996 and was a member of the The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists from 1997-1999.

Steinunn's first book was the poetry collection Kafbátakórinn (The Submarine Choir), which came out in 2011. Two years later, the poetry collection Skuldunautar (Debtors) appeared. In 2016, Steinunn published her first novel Raddir úr húsi loftskeytamannsins (Voices from the telegrapher’s house) and her latest novel, Sterkasta kona í heimi (The Strongest Woman in the World) is expected before Christmas this year. In addition, poetry and short stories have appeared in newspapers and magazines.

Steinunn received a prestigious poetry prize in 2011 and in 2017 she received the Women’s Literature Prize (Fjöruverðlaunin) for Raddir úr húsi loftskeytamannsins. She was featured as one of ten new voices in the literary magazine Literary Europe in 2017.

Steinunn lives in Reykjavik.
