Eiríkur Guðmundsson

Bio

Eiríkur Guðmundsson was born on September 28th 1969 in Bolungarvík, a small town in the Westfjords of Iceland. He graduated from Menntaskólinn við Sund secondary school in Reykjavík in 1988, finished his bachelor's degree in comparative literature from the University of Iceland in 1991 and his M.A. degree in Icelandic literature, also from the University of Iceland, in 1995. Eiríkur worked for the National Broadcasting Service (or RÚV) for most of his career, on cultural programming.

Eiríkur's first novel, 39 þrep á leið til glötunar (39 Steps Towards Damnation), was published in 2004. The novels Undir himninum (Under the Sky) and Sýrópsmáninn (The Syrupy Moon) were published in 2007 and 2010, respectively and more followed. Eiríkur edited a multi-volume collection of author Steinar Sigurjónsson's complete works, which saw publication in 2008. Concurrently, Eiríkur published his book on the literature of Steinar Sigurjónsson, entitled Nóttin samin í svefni og vöku (Writing the Night in Sleeping and waking). Eiríkur also wrote reviews, magazine articles and radio addresses on the subject of literature, culture and community. Eiríkur's last book Ritgerð mín um sársaukann (My Essay on Pain) was published in 2018.

Eiríkur died on August 8, 2022.
